Movement
Young Poland
The name for Polish art and literature from about 1890 to 1918, when Poland was divided between Russia, Prussia and Austria and artists, centred on Kraków, sought a national spirit through modern art. Painters drew on Symbolism, Art Nouveau and Impressionism: Jacek Malczewski filled his pictures with chimeras, angels and melancholy self-portraits about Polish fate; Stanisław Wyspiański made pastels of children and flowers and designed stained glass; Józef Mehoffer, Olga Boznańska with her hushed portraits, Leon Wyczółkowski, Julian Fałat and Jan Stanisławski with his small landscapes all worked in this time.
How to tell it apart: Symbolist mood and Art Nouveau line with Polish subjects: national myths, the Tatra mountains, the Vistula, the countryside and melancholy figures.
